Who is eligible for the flu jab?
We give free NHS flu jabs to adults who are over 18 years of age and are considered to be eligible. Below is a list of persons who are eligible for the flu jab:
- Adults of age 50 and above
- Persons with some medical complications, including children of age 6 months and above.
- Pregnant women
- People who have been listed by NHS to be at higher risk of getting the coronavirus
- Health or social care providers at the forefront
Changes were applied to the service in November to lower the age limit from 65 to 50. Nelson’s pharmacy still provides private flu vaccinations even to people under the age of 50.
Who shouldn’t have the flu jab?
The majority of people can receive a flu vaccine. However, there are a few exceptions involved just like any other health service:
You should avoid getting a flu jab if you are currently unwell with a fever.
If you have an egg allergy, consult with your pharmacist or GP before receiving the flu jab.

What are the side effects of the flu vaccine?
Below is a list of some of the side effects of the flu vaccine:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Fever/shivering
- Muscle aches
- Drowsiness and Tiredness
- Feeling generally unwell
- Swelling, redness, and soreness, at the position of the injection
The only difference between these side effects and the actual flu infection symptoms is that they are milder. These side effects would normally clear up in less than 3 days and do not require any treatment.
